From a 1927 Airfield to a Postwar Water District
Machesney Park’s name comes from Fred Machesney, a barnstorming aviator who opened Machesney Airport here in 1927 — the site where the Machesney Park Town Center, formerly the Machesney Park Mall, stands today. The surrounding land had only opened to settlement in the early 1830s, after the Black Hawk War, and stayed lightly built until airport-era growth in the 1920s pulled in the first wave of houses.
A Water District That Predates the Village Itself
Postwar growth along the Rock River was substantial enough that residents organized the North Park Public Water District years before Machesney Park existed as a municipality — it wasn’t incorporated as a village until a grassroots drive culminated in a February 24, 1981 referendum. That means the water district’s original mains, not a village government, set the baseline plumbing infrastructure for many neighborhoods built before 1981.
