For a plumber the useful local history is what is actually in the walls. Rockford's older housing was plumbed in the eras that produced galvanized steel supply, which corrodes from the inside and shows as pressure loss long before it leaks, and cast iron waste, which fails at the hubs. Copper arrives with the postwar stock and polybutylene with the late boom. Illinois has also driven statewide attention to lead service lines, which makes the material of the line between the main and the meter a question worth asking rather than assuming.
