Byron traces to 1835, when settler Jared Sanford staked a claim while traveling the road from Galena toward Midway, present-day Rockford; the community was officially incorporated as a city in 1878, more than a century before its most famous modern neighbor arrived on the same stretch of the Rock River.

That neighbor is the Byron Nuclear Generating Station, whose two Westinghouse reactors began operating in September 1985 and August 1987 and now draw Rock River water for cooling as they generate roughly 2,347 megawatts for the region.
