A County Seat Since 1836
Belvidere started life in 1835 under the name “Elysian Fields” before its 1836 founding and renaming; that same year, Boone County organized out of Winnebago County and chose Belvidere as its seat, a role the city has held ever since the 1854-1855 Italianate courthouse went up for about $9,000. As a stage stop on the Chicago-Galena route and a grain-and-milk trading center for the surrounding farms, Belvidere built out a dense in-town core well before most of its neighbors.
Two Plumbing Eras, a Few Blocks Apart
On April 21, 1967, an F4 tornado — part of what the National Weather Service calls northern Illinois’ worst tornado disaster — killed 24 people in Belvidere, 13 of them at the high school, and leveled a swath of the town. A plumber working here should expect two distinct eras side by side on the same streets: 19th-century county-seat plumbing that predates the storm, and the rebuilt housing and infrastructure that went in immediately after 1967, often with different-generation materials only a few lots apart.
